LIM domain-binding protein 1 (Ldb1) is a nuclear adaptor protein that associates with LIM-homeodomain and LIM-only proteins in transcriptionally active complexes. An essential feature of Ldb1 is its ability to homotrimerise via its self-association (SA) domain. This allows Ldb1 to mediate long-range genomic interactions, juxtaposing promoters and distal enhancer elements via associated Ldb1 complexes.

The structure of Ldb1’s SA domain has not yet been determined, and there are no known structural homologues. We have purified the SA domain of Ldb1, and grown native protein crystals in order to elucidate the structure of this domain.
